Revised Statement on Catechesis

Catechesis: A Journey of Communion and Intimacy with Christ

The Revised Statement on Catechesis of the Bishops of Southern Africa re-iterates the hope that the vision of Catechesis, presented in this Statement, will continue the effort of engaging in Catechesis as an ongoing Journey of Faith.

This means equipping Christians of all ages and stages in life to holiness in Family, Church and Society. This Journey of Faith cannot end with Confirmation but continues for life.

It promotes the vision that good Catechesis enables and assists ongoing conversion to Jesus in holiness of life, promotes and supports active membership in the Christian Community and calls and prepares those being catechised to live as disciples in mission to the world.

Encouragement is given to Catechists, responsible for the faith formation of children and youth, but it is recognised that the entire responsibility for formation in Faith cannot and should not be the sole responsibility of Catechists.

Bishops, priests, deacons, religious, catechists, ecclesial ministers, parents and the lay faithful are called to be committed to their baptismal commitment in passing on the faith and making Christ known and loved. Active involvement of the Community of the Faithful in parish Catechesis is an essential element of this vision.
